Experience

With over 16 years of leadership and service in four different councils of varying sizes and markets, I have worked in all areas of council management and operations.  Developed skills include staff development and leadership, fundraising and fiscal management, membership growth and retention, camp program enhancements and property improvements, volunteer and community relations, and solid communication at all levels within the organization.

Provide support and leadership to the program and camping operations of the council at four camp properties as well as all program and support functions of the council.  Provide support to three full-time support staff, two professionals, and three rangers.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Manage a year-round camping budget of over $1M.

  • Increased the net surplus of summer and day camp operations from $60,000 to over $225,000.

  • Trained a team of professionals to understand how to read operating budget sheets and to better manage and forecast financials.

  • Developed and enforced a cancellation and refund policy for events and camp reservations.

  • Implemented and managed an online-based software tool to manage camp and program registrations, merit badge completions, facility reservations, online trading post operations, online forms, council-wide point of sale system, unit deposit account management, and integration with the BSA accounting system.

  • Implemented the Fiix computerized maintenance management system for use in four camp properties and the council service center and trained all camp rangers, professionals, and volunteers to utilize.

  • Designed and implemented a local BSA-accredited high adventure base, focusing on canoe expeditions down the Missouri River.

  • Engaged local trade unions to produce a summer camp program for older Scouts to offer trades merit badges and expose the Scouts to unions.

  • Developed annual council-based contingents to provide opportunities for Scouts to attend the BSA high adventure bases.

  • Constructed five new buildings, including three certified tornado shelters, which all provided single-stall/unisex restrooms and showers.

  • Conducted a Powder Horn course for the first time in ten years to help educate Boy Scout and Venturing youth and adult volunteers in high adventure opportunities.

  • Designed and implemented a new Cub Scout resident camp program that grew from serving 472 Cub Scouts to over 900 Cub Scouts in three years.

  • Designed and implemented a fall “FirstCamp” activity to provide an introductory outdoor experience for newly recruited Cub Scouts and their parents.

  • Designed and implemented spring and fall Cub Scout family weekend programs to allow more Scouts the opportunity to participate in accredited Cub Scout camps.

  • Instituted a council campmaster corps program to recruit and engage volunteers in providing leadership and program during the short-term camping season at the camps.

  • Cultivated the council camp promotions chair to become the area commissioner.

  • Designed and implemented simple fall “onboarding” activities to conduct with new youth at joining nights to increase their likelihood to join and provide a first hands-on program.

  • Provided leadership to the creation of a section of the council’s strategic plan, which included the recruitment of a team of professionals and volunteers to research and determine a plan for increased utilization of our properties and attendance at events.

  • Managed the development of a direct report to be promoted in Scouting to a senior management position in the Central Florida Council.

Provided leadership in the council's popcorn sale, project sales campaign, grant applications.  Supervised up to five other professionals and served the surrounding communities of Baltimore including the most affluent county in Maryland.  Served as the staff advisor for the Order of the Arrow lodge.


Key Accomplishments:

  • Led a Good Scout Award Breakfast to increase gross revenue from $47K to over $70K.

  • Managed the council’s popcorn sale to a 9% increase in gross sales.

  • Prospected and recruited a district commissioner who later became the council commissioner.

Provided leadership to the council's premiere Boy Scout resident camp operation at Rodney Scout Reservation serving as camp director.  Developed a staff team of over 100 youth and adults and increased program offerings.  Also served as staff advisor to the council training committee, project sales campaign, and Order of the Arrow lodge.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Managed a year-round camping budget of over $1M.

  • Managed the project sale campaign to increase from $30K to over $52K.

  • Implemented mandatory direct-contact leader training.

  • Increased Boy Scout resident camp attendance from 3,000 to over 3,300.

  • Recruited a camp staff member into the Scouting profession who is now in a management position in the Del-Mar-Va Council.

Provided leadership and guidance to both rural and urban districts, two other professional staff members, and served as the camp director for the council's Cub Scout resident camp operation at Camp Carpenter.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Increased Friends of Scouting in a rural district by 56%.

  • Developed and implemented a district Friends of Scouting pacesetter event to raise $37K in its first year.

  • Achieved 100% of the Friends of Scouting goal by June 30 for five consecutive years.

  • Re-designed the program for Cub Scout resident camp to provide more quality program time for youth campers.

  • Prospected and recruited a district chairman who later became council commissioner and area commissioner.

  • Prospected and recruited a nominating committee of key community leaders, including those from business, church, and civic groups to recruit district leadership.

  • Managed a district of “less-than-supportive” volunteers to become a strong Scouting team for the council and envy to other districts.

  • Maintained a steady membership density despite a decreasing total available youth.

  • Recruited a camp staff member into the Scouting profession who now serves in a senior management position in the Mid-America Council.
